Believed to be partly a precautionary measure the Government, through a firm of Customs and forwarding agents at Wellington, has circularised various firms in New Plymouth asking what storage facilities are available in the town for taking in big quantities of wheat. Details of the Government’s proposals were not given in the circulars received, but several firms who have been communicated with understand that the object is to have a big supply of grain in the country should shipping services be disrupted in the event of war. According to the circular the Government is anxious to know immediately what storage facilities for wheat various firms could make available. It is understood that one firm has been asked if they have sufficient room for 400 tons of wheat, while another firm has been asked what is the maximum space available.
