IRISH FARMERS STRIKE
DEPRESSED CONDITIONS. Writing of the recent one-day strike by Irish farmers organised to draw attention to their depressed conditions, a Dublin correspondent says:— The large cattle market was closed, and large numbers marched through the streets and caused prolonged traffic jams. They carried many banners bearing inscriptions which described their woes and their wants. It is understood that these demonstrations may continue until redress is secured and that the convenience of the Dublin public may receive less consideration on future occasions.
It may only be a coincidence, but it seems as if the demonstration has already boren fruit. Speaking the same night, the Minister of Industry and Commerce, Mr. S. F. Lemass, gave the reconstruction of agriculture first place in the future policy of the Irish Government.
Much of the present trouble might have been avoided if Irish economic policy had been planned with forethought and deliberation, and if the
effect on rural, interests of many of the present tarifls and quotas had been considered beforehand.
