SWEARING-IN CEREMONY

NEW BOROUGH COUNCIL. TRIBUTES TO RETIRING MAYOR. The innovation of having the retiring Mayor, Mr. T. Carroll, swear in the newly elected Mayor, Mr. H. T. Morton, was witnessed at the Borough Council meeting on Wednesday evening. Mr. Morton, who had invited Mr. Carroll to perform this ceremony, also asked that Mr. Carroll be present at this initial meeting of the Council, and the latter remained and gave his opinions on several subjects-which were referred to him.

After the Town Clerk had formally announced the results of the elections, Mr. Carroll swore in the new Mayor, the following being the declaration: "I hereby declare that I will, faithfully and impartially, and according to the best of my skill and judgment, execute the powers and authorities vested in me as Mayor, by virtue of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1933."

Each of the Councillors was sworn in on a similar form in which the word "Councillor" was substituted for "Mayor." As Mr. Carroll vacated the Mayoral chair, he congratulated Mr. Morton on being elected Mayor by a substantial majority, and wished him every success in the position. Mr. Carroll congratulated the four "old Councillors" whose re-election showed that the people appreciated the good work they had done, and also the new members of the Council.

In aslring Mr. Carroll that he do the Council the honour of remaining with them during the evening, Mr. Morton paid tribute to Mr. Carroll's excellent work for the Borough. Mr. T. M Hetet, on behalf of the Council, assured Mr. Morton that he would have every help possible in working for the Borough and the general interests of its citizens. After the meeting had concluded, hospitality was extended by Mr. Morton to the Council and staff. Mr. Morton proposed the toast to the retiring Mayor, saying that Mr. Carroll left the office in which he had performed such good work during the past three years with the respect and admiration of the people of Te Kuiti, and he hoped that he would still continue to show a keen interest in the town of which he was so fond.

In reply Mr. Carroll said that he had very much enjoyed his three years of office as Mayor of Te Kuiti. While in that position, he had supported what, after mature consideration, he thought should be done, without any fear of criticism. He thanked the Mayor for his kind words and said that so long as he was able he would be keenly interested in all local affairs.

The toast to the Mayor, Mr. Morton, was proposed by Cr. Hetet, who was followed by all Councillors assuring Mr. Morton that he would have their wholehearted support in any measures likely to benefit the town or its people. A toast to the Town Clerk, engineer and staff was also honoured.
