WAITOMO L.R.C.

ELECTION OF PRESIDENT. The May meeting of the Waitomo Labour Representation Committee brought an attendance of over 60 members from all parts of the electorate. The first business of importance to be dealt with was to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Mr. G. Cameron. Several delegates spoke in glowing terms of the service rendered by Mr. Cameron as president, and voiced their regret that he was unable to continue to fill the position. Messrs. A. N. Aldridge, Tangitu, P. Murtagh, Te Mawhai, and E. L. O'Brien, Otorohanga, were nominated for the vacancy, and the results were the election of Mr. A. N. Aldridge as president, Mr. P. Murtagh as vice-president, and Mr. K. Hunkin, Te Kuiti, to the resulting vacancy on the executive.

Mr. Aldridge is a pioneer settler of the Tangitu district, and has always taken a keen interest in any matters affecting the welfare of the man on the land.

Mr. Murtagh is an old settler in the King Country and a keen champion of the farmer's cause. Reports of the meetings recently addressed by Mr. J. G. Barclay, M.P. for Marsden, all spoke of the impressive results gained, and of the thorough knowledge displayed by Mi'.. Barclay of the problems of the farmer, the result of a lifetime expei-i----cnce. A strong effort is to be made to obtain the services of other speakers of this calibre. The report and suggestions of the organising committee were received and adopted, and in reply to a question, "How is the Labour Party doing now?" the secretary replied, "Onward and upward." An outline of the highlights of the annual Party Conference was given by Mr. Jack Jones, who referred particularly to those problems affecting this district, and to measures proposed to deal with them. In closing, Mr. Aldridge impressed upon all delegates the truth of the adage, "The price of liberty is eternal vigilance."
