A fierce attack by Don Julio del Vayo .on non-intervention was the chief topic of the League Council meeting. He again demanded that the Spanish Government should be free to buy war material. "Lei us end this sham," he declared. Foreign intervention had been intensified in recent months and Italy had flagrantly violated the promise to Britain by the dispatch of reinforcements during the progress of negotiations resulting in the Italo-British agreement.
The work of recovering the bodies at the Markham colliery, where the death-roll now total 80 men, continued throughout the night. Officials of the company and inspectors descended the pit to make a preliminary examination to discover the cause of the explosion.
