The Australian Associated Press says that the Japanese attack on Amoy is not at present regarded with alarm by British Government quarters. However, the Ambassador to Tokyo, Sir Robert Craigie, is closely watching developments. Amoy is a treaty port in Fukien. The Japanese may be staging the Amoy affair for home consumption, coupled with a test of Chinese strength, but so far as it is not regarded as a curtain raiser to a calculated attack on foreign interests.

Looking a tragic figure, his hands folded over his black cape, Haile Selassie brightened up and smiled on seeing a cheering crowd at the station at Geneva. The "Daily Telegraph" Berlin correspondent says it is most likely that Herr Hitler will denounce the concordat with the Vatican as a result of the Pope's attitude \ while the Fuehrer was in Italy.

The Air Ministry announces that the formation of the first three balloon barrage squadrons -for the defence of London against air raids will begin on May 16. Eventually there will be ten squadrons comprising 500 balloons. The total personnel required will be about 6000 officers and men, and the minimum age limit for enlistment will be 38.
