AROUND THE BOROUGH

ENGINEER'S REPORT. The monthly report of the Borough Engineer, Mr. B. J. Drake, for October, presented to the meeting of the Borough Council on Monday evening, read as follows: During the month the following streets have been repaired with shingle: Mangarino Road, Esplanade, Queen Street, South Street, King Street, Carroll Street, George Street and Ward Street.

During Labour week-end the torrential downpour, although doing no extensive damage, has scoured or washed considerable surface metal from most of the hill roads. A certain amount will be recoverable, but a considerable quantity of new metal will be required in order to repair most of these hill roads. Several water leaks have occurred throughout the reticulation during the month. Two service connections have been renewed and one new service installed.

Most of the perishable portions of the quarry plant have been removed, including the motor. These have been stored under cover .in the Council yard. Finalising of arrangements of hiring of the crusher to the Public Works Department is in hand. As Rata Street has no exit, it is necessary for all vehicles to turn at the end before returning by the oneway approach. At present vehicles make use of private crossings in order to turn. A satisfactory turning place may be constructed near the blind end with an out-of-pocket expenditure of approximately £B, the necessary labour being carried out by the Borough staff.—This work was approved.
