TRAIN SMASH INQUIRY
DEPARTMENTAL INVESTIGATIONS PUBLISHING FINDINGS. INJURED MEN’S PROGRESS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, this day. The cause of the head-on train smash in the Auckland railway yard in Thursday night is being investigated at a departmental inquiry at Auckland to-day. It is being attended by Mr. G. T. Wilson, Superintendent of Transport, and Mr. P. R. Angus, Locomotive Superintendent, who arrived from Wellington. The inquiry is not open to the press, but it is likely that the findings will be published later. The railwaymen injured in the collision, Messrs. Macky and Ongley, though still in hospital, are making steady progress and neither is now in a serious condition.
The breakdown crews have been engaged since Thursday night, and after an inspection by the Committee of Inquiry, the major wreckage remaining was removed yesterday by a breakdown train and a steam crane.
