PROFESSIONAL BOXING
TE KUITI CONTEST. The Te Kuiti Boxing Association are leaving no stone unturned to make March 6th a memorable night in the boxing history of these pai’ts. The professional encounter in which the two pi’ominent lightweights, Stock and Martin, are engaged is arousing a great deal of interest as it is many years since two such capable pugilists have appeared in the local-arena. Al. Stock, the youthful Hawke’s Bay boxer, has a style that will please those who want action in the ring. He is the type that gets to work right from the commencement and relishes the forceful toe to toe style of fighting. He showed up to great advantage in his two recent contests with the Filipino, Gildo, and considering that the latter has a reputation for speed and elusiveness and the fact that he is a veteran in the ring compared with Stock, the latter did wonderfully well to push him to two close decisions. Al.’s style is similar to that of the tough Australian, Billy Martin, who is a wiry type of boxer, who believes in mixing it right throughout. The Association had this in mind when arranging the bout and on paper it certainly looks as though the Stock-Martin contest will be a “battle royal.” A splendid programme of amateur contests will precede the main bout, and two well known Aucklanders will be engaged in the persons of Caltaux and Sheridan. Caltaux is to meet Hunter of Te Kuiti. The latter comes here with a reputation and is confident that it will not suffer in his meeting with the rugged Northerner. Sheridan scored a meritorious win over the Auckland bantam champion, Gordon, in Auckland last week and for his effort was awarded a special trophy. As an indication of the interest being displayed in the tournament, the reserves at McColl’s are filling rapidly and the fans are advised to book their seats early to avoid disappointment.
