“My boy, you are romancing,” was the Hon. R. Semple's reply to the spokesman of a deputation from the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society in Temuka on Tuesday, when a request was made that the proposal to use the Tengawai River as a source of supply for Downlands water supply scheme be held up while an investigation of three springs, represented to be a better source, was made (states the Christchurch Star-Sun). “I am not spending money recklessly in this country,” Mr. Semple added. “I am not going to do it unless I am certain it is justified. I am not going to ask Parliament to pass legislation in my name unless I am sure the measure is warranted.” Mr. Semple said he was absolutely satisfied with the reliability of the present proposed source, but he was absolutely satisfied that everything humanly possible would be done to protect the interests of the acclimatisation society.
