HEALTH.
A PERFECT DIET. Deep in the minds of a number of people seems to lurk the idea that, if one is overweight, then the simplest way of removing that surplus is—to starve it off! I have known women whose curves had become too generous to cut down their food to a minimum and become gaunt and holloweyed with hunger. So much harm has been done by such starvation that the question of dieting has come to be considered with grave misgivings; and yet it is the simplest matter in the world to reduce weight by a sane and properly balanced diet. I am going to give you a really tested diet chart—one that is suitable for women of all ages and in all sorts of jobs. You must, of course, use common sense about it and if you have any suspicion that your excess weight may be due to abnormal causes, do consult a doctor first. However, for all perfectly normal people, no more excuses for overweight—here is what you must eat: For Breakfast: One egg and one slice of bread (about 1 ounce). For Lunch: One egg and an average helping of vegetables or salad (about a quarter of a pound). For Dinner: One cup of clear soup and a good slice of meat (about C ounces) with an average helping of vegetables or salad. If the question cf clear soup is difficult, then you may take some meat gravy instead.
Any of the following vegetables will do: Lettuce, cucumber, endive, celery, radishes, tomatoes, watercress, spinach, cauliflower, sprouts, cabbage, mushrooms or asparagus; in fact, any greeh vegetables that are in season. Please drink as much as you like (but only between meals). In fact, pure cold water is the finest aid to a slimming diet and you should try to drink 8 glasses a day. There is a “but” to this drink question. No intoxicants are allowed while you are dieting, and you must not touch milk. There are two more details to remember. Avoid fried foods of any description and cut butter and sugar right out of the menu. Oh, and I forgot, take a teaspoonful of bicarbonate of soda every day to counteract any acidity. If you have found previously that eggs tend to cause constipation, by taking the bicarbonate of soda and by drinking plenty of water you will overcome that trouble too.
