MORTGAGE LEGISLATION
RATE ARREARS COLLECTION. Since the Mortgage Rehabilitation Act has been passed, the collection of the arrears of rates has fallen by £SOO, stated the clerk of the Waitomo County Council, Mr. J. N. O’Brien, at the Council meeting yesterday. He said that the Council had sent out the usual notices, but in a large number of cases no reply had been received. This statement was made in answer to a query by Cr. Jones as to what progress had been made in rate collections from those included in lists recently considered by Councillors. The clerk said that he .was at present convinced that rates could not be made an adjustable debt, as was borne out further from the fact that special provision was included for the wiping off of the 10 per cent, penalty. What view the Commission would take, however, he could not state. Mr. Lee said he was anxious to collect some of these rates —he was sure some ratepayers were “sitting on them.”
The clerk was instructed to watch the position carefully, and was given power to appoint a solicitor to represent the Council at such hearings as he deemed necessary.
