A rather unexpected answer was received by a solicitor from his witness in the Court on Tuesday. A man was charged with using indecent language, and hjur'solicitor asked him if ever he had been in trouble of this nature before. “No, not in this country,” he answered. “But I was in a prison camp in Germany!” One of the pleas he advanced was that “at any rate, I learnt that language in the army.” Both remarks caused some amusement and interest in the Court. The Magistrate, after hearing about the incident in Germany, asked what the penalty had been, but the defendant’s reply was not audible. In Tuesday’s case, however, the penalty was 40s and costs.
