PIO PIO

WOMEN’S DIVISION ACTIVITIES. (Own Correspondent.) The Pio Pio Women’s Division Gardening Circle held its first meeting for 1937 on Thursday, 4th inst., at the home of Mrs. R. Tebbutts, Te Mapara. A good attendance of members enjoyed the garden under perfect summer conditions. Mrs. Tebbutt’s gladiola bed was especially admired. Mrs. McAlley, circle secretary, read the report of the last meeting and the memorandum of the fixtures for the coming season. She informed members that the next month’s gathering is to be held at the home of Mrs. J. Johnstone on March 11th instead of the usual first Thursday. The departure of Mrs. Mclntyre, circle leader, was reported and noted with great regret. The Best Flowers competition brought some beautiful blooms, and the results, decided by vote, were as follows:—Best collection of dahlias, Mrs. P. Cullen 1, Mrs. Morris 2; best collection of gladioli, Mrs. Tebbutt 1, Mrs. Nelson 2, Mrs. Trust 3. Mrs. Tebbutt had arranged a treasure hunt in the garden which, after keen competition, was won by Mrs. Hilton Bradley. The prize for the hunt was a cut glass cream jug. When afternoon tea had been served, Mrs. L. Young read a paper on bulb culture, with special attention to daffodils. Mrs. C. K. Wilson put in an appeal for a garden party to be organised in the autumn in aid of the community fund. Mrs. Wilson pointed out that the headquarters funds were particularly low owing to the farmers’ present financial anxiety over their labour troubles. The competition for the next meeting is to be (1) Best collection of asters, (2) best collection of cannas. Personal. The engagement is announced of Lilian R., only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Box, Pio Pio, to William J., third son of Mr. and Mrs. Fraser, Tauranga. The marriage will take place this year.
