HAMILL SHIELD CRICKET

KIWIS’ BIG SCORE. DRAWN MATCH WITH ARIA. At Aria on Saturday, winning the toss, Kiwis took first strike and opened with Boulton and Pederson to the bowling of Knock and Gillies. Neither batsman played Knock with confidence, numerous balls beating the batsmen and the wickets, whilst balls were being skied frequently by Pederson, but due possibly to a field set rather too close in these all fell out of reach of the fielders. Pederson’s daring and lucky innings was quite a good one to watch but as cricke.t was not the equal of Boulton’s, who made some lovely strokes along the carpet. Pederson’s enterprise and Boulton’s solidarity placed them definitely on top of the Aria bowling, although Knock’s first spell was deserving of several wickets. It was only when Arneil took the ball that the partnership was broken, Pederson being beaten by a beauty. Evans, next man in, made some lusty if unorthodox shots and quickly reached his fifty, and then retired. Barlow did not stay long. Shortly afterwards Boulton declared the innings closed, leaving Aria two hours in which to get 234 runs. He paid the penalty for this late declaration, as Aria was thus enabled to play out time and share the points. Faced with this big total and so short a time, the Aria batsmen were not looking for runs, which cramped the style and power of their more forceful batsmen. John Holloway and Brockway opened and were batting confidently until Brockway was run out following a shot by Holloway off g. no-ball. Knock next in literally spooned up a shortish ball to one of the two deep legs set out to trap him—this the first ball he received. Kinder shaped well but did not last long, playing l’ound a good ball from Evans. Arneil joined Holloway and this pair kept going for about an hour before Holloway made the one and only mistake of an innings of nearly li hours. On his form at present Holloway is the obvious opening batsman with Boulton for a representative team. ReeveSmith then joined Arneil and these two seemed likely to play out time as both were meeting the ball with the full face of the bat, until Arneil, obviously tired, played over a plain good length ball. Once more Kiwis’ hopes were raised and remained so for neither Carlyon nor Hill stayed long. Gillies next, in stayed longer than he deserved, although that wasn’t very long. Dawson then came in and although he made no runs played a dead straight but right down on every ball he received, the result being that he and Reeve-Smith were still undefeated at stumps. Any luck that was going was with Kiwis, and on the day’s play and the merits of the side a draw was a fair result. Apart from Evans, Kiwi’s bowling was not at all aggressive. For Aria Knock’s first spell was excellent bowling with no luck except for the batsmen. Arneil after keeping wicket came on and would soon have made a difference to the attack. Gillies’ bowling met its desserts at the hands of quick-footed and aggressive batsmen. Kiwi’s fielding was as usual excellent, whilst Aria’s fielding was no worse than usual. • KIWIS.—Ist Innings. HIGH SCHOOL. Pio Pio gained a three-point win over High School on the Domain last Saturday. With Howell scoring a hard hit 29, the High School’s first innings total was 53. To this Pio Pio replied with 62—though the first four batsmen performed well, the remainder no more relished the bowling of Corin than did School that of Rodger. High School’s second innings, with Davison and Teesdale coming to light, raised a total of 72 —again Rodger’s bowling troubled the batsmen greatly. This left them in a fairly good position, but Ronaldson quickly knocked up 46, and a total of 72 was raised for the loss of three wickets. L LODGE MATCH. WIN FOR FORESTERS. Foresters won the Lodge cricket match played against Oddfellows at : the Railway Oval during the weekend. Though Oddfellows lost one of their opening batsmen without registering, the other, Evans, and the incoming man, Elliott, were not parted until 61 was in the book. The total for the innings was 105, which seem-, ed to place Oddfellows in a fairly good position. Foresters soon dashed their hopes, however. Boulton, Paice and Corin; got going, and the first wicket fell for 44, the second for 80, the third for 90, and the fourth for 100, and at the fall of the eighth wicket Foresters had raised 119 runs. The following team has been selected to represent Maniapoto in the challenge match against Taumarunui, at Taumarunui next Saturday, for the South Auckland Shield: — N. Ronaldson, Smith and D. Rodger (Pio Pio), G. Corin (High School), Boulton and E. Evans (Kiwi), Arneil, Kinder and Knock (Aria), Seccombe and Dinsdale (Colts). Emergencies: Pederson (Kiwi), McLeod (Colts). This team is probably the best representative team that has been picked to represent Maniapoto in recent years, and, it is anticipated, should have a good Chance of lifting the shield. The captain of the team will very likely be N. Ronaldson, of Pio Pio, a good batsman who is fond of the offside, and a change spin bowler. Pio Pio will also provide the wicketkeeper in Smith, who though as a batsman is perhaps not a great rungetter, is a very hard man to shift. Rodger is a fast bowler and an unorthodox bat, but who is, however, likely to come to light with quite useful totals on occasion. High School’s contribution to the team is G. Corin. This player is a good left hand spin bowler and right hand batsman, and is very sound in the field. Boulton, the Kiwi captain, and opening bat, is playing more steadily this year and some very useful totals have been raised off his bat. Kiwis’ fast bowler, E. Evans, has also a place in the team —he is also liable to knock up the runs and is very fair in the field. The Aria men in the team are headed by their all-rounder, Captain Arneil, a successful run-getter and a bowler who uses his head —he doesn’t mind sending up a loose ball, but probably the next one looks the same but isn’t! He is also a good slip fielder. Probably the best field in the competition at cover-point is Kinder, who is also a good bat once he gets set. Seccombe and Dinsdale, both from Colts’ team, headed the first round, batting averages this season, and both have come well up in the bowling figures and are safe in the field. Brainsby, who is probably Maniapoto’s best fast bowler, was not available. The emergencies are Pederson, who has made several good scores, and was unlucky not to get into the team, and McLeod, very safe in the outfield and liable to make a few runs on occasion.
