CRICKETING ENTHUSIASM.

To the Editor). Sir,—Saturday last marked a great revival in cricketing enthusiasm. Two teams, Pio Pio and High School, appealed to me as responsible for it. Pitted against the opposing team, High School put up a very creditable fight. It seems a pity that the school authorities don’t take a keener interest in the boys, among whom there is some very good material. The likes of Elliott, Davison, and two or three more, will go a long way with a bit more tuition and coaching. The necessity for a coach was very pronounced on Saturday both in regard to Pio Pio and High School. The different teams have a" nasty habit of placing their legs in front of the wicket; I will give the School credit for being second to Pio Pio in that respect. Another item I would like to call their attention to is this—never question the decision of the umpire at the wickets. It shows bad form and is apt to inflame the spectators, as it did on Saturday. It was like old times, to see the interest taken by the spectators and their rooted objection to the umpires’ decisions, my own in particular. If we had a coach for the boys, we could always have some excitement on Saturdays. I would suggest that well-known cricketers take the boys in hand and with the school authorities set fire to the boys’ enthusiasm. See that they practise regularly and I’ll guarantee that this town will turn out a team of cricketers second to none.—l am, etc., J. DIXON.
