FEW COMMENTS
THE BOROUGH LOAN POLLS. NOTIFYING HEALTH DEPARTMENT. Few comments were made by members of the Borough Council last evening upon the Town Clerk reporting on the result of the Waterworks and Streets Improvements Loan Polls, which were held last Wednesday. The Mayor said it was evident that the ratepayers of Te Kuiti were not prepared to pay for improvements to the waterworks. Cr. Issac: Oh, some of them, sir. The Mayor: The majority of them, at any rate. Some were in favour of the scheme. Cr. Isaac: And some were definitely not in favour of it. The Mayor commented it had been a matter of pounds, shillings and pence. Cr. Douglas said the next time the people wanted a loan they could have a poll themselves. Cr. Mackersey said he was quit© satisfied that, in spite of the fact that the loan proposals had been turned down, the Council had done the right thing. The water scheme, considering the necessity to keep costs down as low as was possible, was the only practical one, and had been turned down on the score of expense. He said the result of the poll should be forwarded to the Health Department, which had some responsibility in the matter as far as the health of the town was concerned. “We can do no more,” he said. “We have put it to the ratepayers and they have turned it down.” Cr. Isaac: What about expending sixpence and sending the Health Department the copies of the Chronicle for last week? Cr. Mackersey agreed that the three Chronicles referred to be forwarded to the Health Department along with the result of the loan poll. It was decided to do this.
