THE WATER SUPPLY.
(To the Editor). Sir, —This week we have had two things, the most amusing meeting held in Te Kuiti for a very long time, and a loan poll which turned down the Borough loan proposals. The first was a joke, though some may have thought it a tragedy at the time; the second was a tragedy, though some, I regret to state, apparently looked upon it as a joke and had due celebration of it. Both loans were lost on the vital interest of pocket, which, to my mind, completely overshadowed intelligence at the time of the poll. But surely enough intelligence remains with the people of Te Kuiti to make them realise this —that undue delay in _tackling this problem will cost Te Kuiti dear. I pass over Borough Councillors’ comments that the system is likely to collapse utterly at any time, except to say I don’t quite believe them—the system can be patched up and patched up as in the past, with the cost and the patches ever increasing. The slip area has always been there. Very shortly, however, the time when it might break down will loom, and then we’ll have to relay, and not recondition, our mains, we won’t get our money at 3% per cent., and we’ll suffer a lot of inconvenience in the meantime. That is the position we have been stampeded into by those who talk in the same breath of keeping down indebtedness and of the Viaduct pumping scheme. They had one object, and one only, to block the scheme to keep the rates down in the meantime—but surely they realise they’ll only have to pay extra in the future.—l am, INTAKE.
