BOY ESCAPES DROWNING
BRAVE RESCUE BY MOTORIST. DIVE INTO SEA. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, this day. While fishing from the Orakei bridge with other children, Norman Richardson, aged 12, fell from the bridge railing into the harbour and was carried out by the strong tide. The boy was unable to swim but kept afloat by paddling.* Unsuccessful efforts were made by his companions to throw him a rope. The screams of the children attracted the attention of a woman, who waved to a passing motorist, Mr. L. W. T. Parlby, an employee of the Transport Board, who threw off his coat and dived from the bridge. Being a strong swimmer he was able to rescue the boy, who responded to resuscitation and was then driven home.
