THREAT TO BOMB MADRID

REBELS’ PROGRESS IN SOUTH. CONFLICTING REPORTS. POSITION OF CAPITAL. (Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 12.20 p.m.) London, July 20. It is reported from Gibraltar that the rebels made great progress during the night and secured possession of many more towns, particularly in the southern Peninsula. It is significant that they captured many aerodromes and now threaten to bomb Madrid from the air, failing the Government’s unconditional surrender within two hours. Listeners last night heard Senor Goded broadcast advice to the Barcelona rebels to follow his example and surrender. Mass Executions of Loyalists. The British United Press correspondent at Tangier states that a leading resident, Signor Tetuan, says he witnessed mass executions of loyalists and high officers for refusing to join the revolt. A British United Madrid message says the Government announces that the military revolt at the capital is crushed. Moratorium Declared. The Government has suspended all banking transactions throughout Spain for forty-eight hours and declared a moratorium on all debts for the same period. No amount exceeding £55 can be withdrawn from the banks. A Tangier message says that Spanish Morocco is now quiet owing to the intervention of the Sultan, who expressed disapproval at the bombardment of Ceuta, Mililla and Laracha, in which Moorish lives were endangered. In a wireless broadcast from Ceuta it was stated that General Mola, at the head of 15,000 rebels, had entered Madrid, but a Madrid broadcast official announcement says that all barracks have surrendered to the Government, including the chief rebel stronghold, Montana barracks, which the Government had previously bombed. British Destroyer Leaves for Malaga. Owing to incendiarism at Malaga, which is in rebel hands, the destroyer Shamrock is sailing at full steam from Gibraltar to succour British subjects.
