Shouting "Traitor! You are about to die!" eight Storm Troopers belonging to the Iron Guard broke into the surgical ward of a Bucharest hospital where Stelescu, a former deputy and founder of the Fascist Crusaders' League, had just undergone an operation for appendicitis. Some riddled him with 28 revolver bullets. Others kept off the staff at revolver point. Notes were handed to the American and Japanese Ambassadors in London for communication to their respective Governments in which the British Government stated its intention of invoking Article XXI, of the London Naval Treaty of 1930, known as the "escalator clause." The object is retention of 40,000 tons of over-age destroyer tonnage above the figure which, according to the treaty, the British Commonwealth should possess on December 31 next. The principal recommendations which will be made to the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, by the goodwill mission on its return to New Zealand were disclosed by the Minister of Lands, the Hon. F. Langstone, at an important meeting with representatives of all sections of the Samoan people. The "News Chronicle" gives prominence to a message from its Paris correspondent quoting an "unimpeachable French official authority" for the statement that the Italian garrison in Addis Ababa is cut off from communication with the world, with only one month's supplies. No supply train has reached the city from Jibouti since July 6 owing to Abyssinian bands cutting the railway. The Australian Wool Board adopted a proposal for a levy of. 6d a bale on all wool received into store up to June 30, , 1937, to provide for research and publicity within Australia. It' is expected the levy will yield £750,000.
