MANGAPEEHI

(Own Correspondent.) Football is in full swing again and Saturday last saw the first match played on the home ground for this season, the game being Mangapehi juniors v. Pio Pio juniors. Although the day was dull and cold from a spectator's point of view, the conditions were ideal for the players with the exception of the ground which was naturally heavy after the recent rains. Mangapehi won the toss and Pio Pio kicked off, following up hard and fast. The visitors several times had the home team working hard on the defensive and after about twenty minutes play L. Anderson crossed the line by the goal posts to score a very nice and well deserved try for Pio Pio, which Watson converted. The home team then settled down in earnest and from then on the odds were fairly even throughout. Half time was called with the score Pio Pio 5, Mangapehi nil. On resuming play both teams fought hard for supremacy, the game being on and off the field one moment and the next vice versa. By this time the ball was very heavy and the bulk of the play was confined to the forwards with occasional passing movements between the backs. Mangapehi was determined to even the score and with a fine rush their forwards took the ball through to Pio Pio's line, Hall passing out to Binnie who went over to score. McNeil failed to convert. With both teams playing a hard, even game from then on it looked as if the visitors might emerge victorious, but Mangapehi's chance came when Pio Pio was penalised for handling in the scrum while defending in their own twenty-five. McNeil took the kick and sent the ball neatly between the posts. The game ended a few minutes later, the final score being Mangapehi 6, Pio Pio 5. The game was good and hard, but play was clean and sportsmanlike throughout. Mr. H. Hall was the referee. The annual general meeting of the Mangapehi Physical Culture Club was held in the local hall on Monday, May 11th, there being a fair attendance. A satisfactory balance sheet was read and adopted. It was decided to carry on the gymnasium classes again this year, and Tuesday, May 12th, was fixed for the opening night, Mr. H. F. Hayes being appointed chief instructor. Officers for the current year were then elected as follows:—Chairman, Mr. H. F. Hayes; secretary and treasurer, Mr. P. C. Jones; executive committee, Messrs. R. W. Nayler, R. Jensen, W. Edwards ,and a representative of the football club to be selected by its own management committee; hon. auditor, Mr. E. M. Smith. Subscriptions for the year were fixed at 4s for senior members and 2s for junior members. The meeting closed with a hearty vote of thanks to last year's committee for the way the affairs of the club were managed.
