THE STATE THEATRE
"THE GLASS KEY." Mystery addicts will have the opportunity of unravelling the intricacies of another Dashiell Hammett murder mystery when Paramount's "The Glass Key" comes to the State Theatre to-night (guest night), and on Friday 'afternoon and evening. This newest film from the pen of the author of the justly famed "The Thin Man" stars George Raft with a supporting cast that includes Edward Arnold, Claire Dodd, Rosalind Keith, Ray Milland and Charles Richman. The politicians of a big city .-are the principals in this enthralling story. The victim is Ray Milland, the son of Charles Richman whom Edward Arnold is supporting for a Senatorial job. The gripping climax of "The Glass Key" shows how Raft traps the real murderer into a confession, clears his friend and y/ins the love i f his daughter, Rosalind Keith. THE EMPRESS. A quartette of the screen's best fun makers made up two blonde | menaces, Joan Blondell and Glenda Farrell, and Hugh Herbert and Allen Jenkins head the cast with Joan and Glenda again teamed as a pair of wise-cracking gold diggers, in the film "Miss Pacific Fleet," the first unit at the Empress Theatre on Friday and Saturday. They play the parts of two chorus girls, stranded on the Pacific Coast, and running a concession in an amusement park at a naval base in the hope of getting enough money to pay their way back to New York and jobs. Warner Brothers are said to have produced a most unusual picture in "Heat Lightning," the second unit. Its location is both unique and picturesque—a gas station in the heart of the desert. They also have crowded the dynamic action into a space of 24 hours, but in that space of time the life of one of the characters is snuffed out and that of two others unalterably changed. Aline MacMahon, Ann Dvorak and Preston Foster head the cast.
