RACIAL PREJUDICES
ORIENTALS IN CANADA. WARNING BY PREMIER. (Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 10.45 a.m.) Ottawa, February 21. A spirited debate on the‘Commonwealth proposal to grant the franchise to Orientals in British Columbia or exclude them, drew from the Premier, Mr. McKenzie King, a warning that race prejudices must not be raised in Canada. The Oriental trade was vital to the province and must not be endangered by misunderstandings. The franchise was a matter for negotiation between countries. Japan had observed the immigration treaty to the letter. Mr. Angus Maclnnis, the mover, charged the Japanese with acquiring large British Columbia timber lands and thus excluding Canadians from employment. The debate was adjourned.
