CHECKING AGE OF BUTTER.

A grave abuse has developed in connection with New Zealand butter. This is the supplying of butter to English retailers (butter probably purchased in the first place by speculators) that is over a year old. The Dairy Board has decided to have carried into effect a suggestion of Mr. W. M. Singleton, Director of the Dairy Division, that the year of manufacture be indicated by changing the colour of ink in the grade stamping on August 1 of each year. Attention was first directed to the evil by the Liverpool District Grocers and Provision Dealers’ Association, which wrote to the High Commissioner asking if the year in which the butter was made could be indicated on the boxes.
