GOLD PRODUCTION

FIGURES FOR NEW ZEALAND DECREASED OUTPUT LAST YEAR Gold production in New Zealand j during 1934 is estimated at 160,248; ounces, as against 161,755 ounces | for the previous year, a decrease of 1 1507 ounces. Much lower yields from the Blackwater and Alexander mines, due, it is stated,, to interruptions caused by labour disputes, are given. as the reason for this drop in production. With a large number of dredges now operating in the goldbearing areas of the Dominion, the prospects are that this year's production will be the highest for some; years.

Since 1930 the largest quantity of; gold produced in New Zealand in j any one year was 166,354 ounces in 1932. The yield for 1930 was 120,-! 931 ounces, and that for 1931 129,-j 861 ounces. Had last year's output j from the Blackwater and Alexander mines reached the level of the yields for the previous year, the total production would have been well above the figures for many years back. In , 1933 the Blackwater mine produced 22,621 ounces, as compared with 16,-; 103 last year, and the Alexander mine 4030 ounces as against 1805 for 1934. The combined decrease in the production of these two mines therefore totalled 8743 ounces.
