CITRUS INDUSTRY

NEW SOUTH WALES AND N.Z. MARKET. How much New South Wales citrus growers are affected by the loss of the New Zealand market was explained by Brigadier - General Hearne, president of the New South Wales Fruit Growers' Federation. He said the continued loss of the New Zealand market was seriously affecting the industry. Advantage had been taken of every loophole in the embargo, but no progress had been made. The executive of the federation had interviewed the New Zealand Ministers, Messrs Coates and Masters, when they visited Sydney some time ago to meet Federal Ministers in conference. Mr Coates had said that New Zealand was only too willing to allow New South Wales fruit into the Dominion, but this was prevented by the terms of an agreement with the United States of America. If the federation could prevail upon the United States to eliminate the clause in the agreement, New Zealand would be only too willing to import Australian fruit. Mr Coates had added that this wOuld also depend on the removal by the Federal Government of the embargo against New Zealand potatoes.
