“CLOG ON INDUSTRY”

MOTOR TAXATION. The opinion is held by the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce that the present scale of motor taxation is a clog on industry and. is hindering the return of prosperity. The view is also held that it •is a class tax which exceeds all bouhds. At a meeting held on Tuesday it was decided to ask the Associated Chambers to take action to prevent any further “raids” by the Government on the highways funds, direct or indirect, and to urge that the tax be reduced. It was pointed out that the petrol tax was the highest in the world, and if the Government contemplated any reduction in taxation, then motorists should be entitled to share in any such reduction. It came as a disturbing thought that the Government had lost sight of the principles on which the Main Highways Act was planned. The Government had taken huge sums from the road fund for national purposes, and then when the highways fund had been depleted, had had the audacity to lend the fund money on which it charged interest.
