CONDEMNING STOCK
POWERS OF INSPECTORS.
The law regarding the condemnation of stock by stock inspectors was. explained in a letter from the Minister of Agriculture read at last week’s meeting of the Te Awamutu subprovincial executive of the Farmers’ Union. “The position is that, the inspector of stock has power to condemn and destroy, or cause to be destroyed, diseased stock,” stated the Minister. “In cases of doubt the inspectors themselves seek the decision of Government veterinarians. Also, in general practice, if an owner feels that the circumstances, in his opinion, warrant his requesting that the opinion of a Government veterinarian be obtained upon an animal which an inspector holds to be diseased, the inspector arranges accordingly, or, alternatively, in any case of emergency where delayed action might have serious results on the spread of disease, specimens are taken from the condemned animal and forwarded to the Veterinary Laboratory for examination and report, the report being always available for the information of the owner, who is entitled to full compensation if the animal is proved not to have been diseased within the meaning of the Act.”
