CRICKET

WAITOMO v. KIWI§. GOOD DAY’S SPORT. On Saturday last the Kiwi Cricket Club journeyed to Waitomo to play their first match of the season. An enjoyable and interesting game resulted, the game ending in a victory for the Waitomo team on the first innings. Sears, Marwood and Saunders wrought fearful havoc with the wickets of the visitors in their. first stand —Paice was top scorer with a humble six, and 32 was the sum total. Two mighty hits from Spinetto’s willow and a more cautiously garnered nine from Sears saw an auspicious opening for Waitomo, but they were well on their way down the list before Johnson, also with the aid of a boundary, passed the double figure mark for 12 not out, and a total for his team of 56. Banfield was the most consistently used bowler. Then Bolton and McLaughlen would not part after they opened for Kiwis’ second innings. When they did, they must needs leave the wicket almost together, but wth the total of 37 to their credit. The hour was pitting late, so the rest of them sailed into the bowling with varied success, declaring at 7 wickets for the good total of 79. Waitomo failed to register form in their second hit up, but the time saved them when they were six wickets down for 14— McLaughlen and Sanderson being the ones responsible for the slaughter.
