BENEFIT MATCH
PUKEWEKA SHIELD FINAL. FORESTALL MEMORIAL SHIELD MATCHES. The final of the Pukeweka Shield between Te Kuiti and Hangatiki is to be played at Rugby Park next Saturday as a benefit match for P. Davis. This player of the Hangatiki Club received a compound fracture of his leg some time ago, and has been in hospital ever since. It is to be sincerely hoped that a large crowd will be at the match, especially as the game should be of much interest. All passes for the day have been cancelled. The annual Forestall Memorial Shield seven-a-side tournament will be contested at Mangapehi. Great keenness is evinced in the comptition for this handsome trophy, for no less than nine teams have been entered from the Sub-Union.
A challenge from the Taumarunui Club for the Hetet Shield was accepted by the Maniapoto Rugby Union last evening, and the match will be played here on Saturday week, September 9th. The referees submitted to the club for selection were Messrs. Joseph, Ingpen and Harper. A vote of thanks to the Ratana Band was carried for the provision of a team to play the Maniapoto Maoris the other Saturday, thus preventing spectators being disappointed by reason of the other game which had to be declared off.
The Pio Pio juniors were granted permission to travel to Rotorua to play a team there. H. Taane, a Mangapehi junior, was reported for foul play, and his case in the meantime was held over pending receipt of further evidence from the referee.
The work of B. Neal, who though only a junior player, filled a gap in the senior representative ranks in the Maniapoto-Tainui match last Saturday, was very favourably commented on at the meeting. Several details in connection with the South Auckland-Northern King Country match, to be played at Rugby Park on Wednesday next were also discussed.
