WAR ON BACHELORS

WEN AND THEIR CLUB.

GIRL'S SECRET PLANS

Plans are being laid secretly and methodically for a fully-fledged "sex war" in Newcastle-under-Lyme, England (says a correspondent of the News of the World).

Since the revival last year of the Bachelors' Club, which was originally founded half a century go, an attitude of contempt has become distinctly noticeable toward the members of the club by the eligible young women of the town. Now things have come to a head, and when the feminine fireworks are released they will go off with a real bang. The leader of the anti-bachelor movement has forbidden the publication of her name, as it is intended to keep the enemy in the dark until the phychological moment arrives. She states, however, that the line of action which she and her supporters will take will cause the club members to readjust their ideas about marriage. "The Bachelors' Club," she stated, "is only a cloak for rightdown meanness. Instead of facing up to the responsibilities of marriage, they simply pay 5s and become a member of the club. "After that it is a case of 'self all the time. They even flaunt their matrimonial aloofness by wearing ties and scarves with their club coloursblue, white and cream. At their first annual ball, however, they found it necessary to invite girls a'nd women of all ages, married or single. Now they have gone back into their clubs shells for another year—so they think! But just you wait and see!" An official of the club smiled when the writer hinted at the dark days ahead for the members. "It is not the first time we have been threatened," he declared, "but we are ready for all eventualities. If our members wish to remain bachelors, why shouldn't they? Marriage is not a game or a pastime. It's a sentence! "Any member who changes his mind is not allowed to resign from the club. He is expelled—drummed out on the spot! After that he is fined £l. It is singular that the girls who are making all the fuss now did not accept the challenge when the club was re-formed on February 29, 1932 —leap year!" Among the many mottoes of the club are:—

He who courts and runs away Goes to court another day. The fundamental object of the bachelors' club, it is stated, is to help charities. In the first 10 months of its new existence £250 was raised toward the £SOO required for the endowment of a child's cot in the Staffordshire Royal Infirmary.
