ELECTION RUMOURS
EMOTION IN AMERICA. REPORTED TRAIN WRECK. New York, November 7. In the final rush of the Presidential election, every artifice was used in the endeavour to swing votes, and everyday occurrences were" invested with important and sometimes sinister bearing on the party fight. An instance was the story from Athens, Ohio, that disaster to President Hoover's special train was averted by a miracle. It was reported that an attempt was made to wreck the train by the removal of thirty-nine spikes from the rails at a curve on a 40ft. embankment. The discovery was made several hours after the President's train passed the spot. The story, however, was a fake, and within a few minutes was contradicted as false. The legitimate removal of some spikes by workers after the tram passed started the rumour.
