It has been officially announced that President Hindenburg would give his decision on the Hitler problem on Tuesday. The prospects of the Nazi leader being appointed Chancellor are said to be remote. Believing that the scale of beer will be legal within 60 days, the Mayor of Chicago, Mr. Anton Cermak, has signed a pledge not to touch liquor until he can buy beer at 5 cents (normally 2%d) a glass. (2) The Labour correspondent of The Times says the Communists are organising a movement to capture the leadership of the trades unions. They are reverting to tactics which previously failed. These will be the first executions under the campaign for purging the Government service. The N.S.W. State Government has decided to abolish night betting on mechanical hare racecourses. The opinion is expressed in Parliamentary circles that this will mean practically the end of tin hare racing in this State. The Speaker of the House of Representatives at Washington, and Vice-President-elect, Mr. J. N. Garner, told newspapermen on Tuesday that in his opinion the United States House will pass the Beer Bill at the short session. He refrained, however, from any forecast as to the probable time. Roosevelt, President-elect, at the White House on Tuesday, but found Mr. Roosevelt still of the opinion that the immediate question of the instalment of December 15 is a problem for the present Administration.
