SHORTENING A BOLT.
The best method of shortening a bolt without damaging the thread is to screw two nuts on to it so that the portion to be cut off is projecting; the nuts should then be tightened against each other and gripped in a vice, when the surplus portion can be cut off with a hackshaw. The advantages of this method are that the portion required is not damaged if the saw slips, while the nuts “clean up” the end of the thread when they are removed.
