PROPOSED GOLF LINKS

UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED. CONSIDERATION OF SCHEME. A majority approved of the proposal to establish a new golf links for local players was given at a representative meeting held last evening in the Municipal Hall convened for the purpose of discussing the scheme. Mr. J. M. Hine was voted to the chair, and there was a good . attendance of members from both the Te Kuiti and Burnside clubs. Mr. Hine, in outlining the proposal which had so far been discussed between an interim committee and the owner of the property, Mr. W. Frerichs, set out that a preliminary meeting had been held with the latter, when the question of terms had been gone into. The proposal would, of course, have to be submitted to the two clubs for endorsement or otherwise. The speaker went on to say that a satisfactory tenure was available with right of purchase, which was a very important point. The question of transport for non car-owners was also one which would have to be gone into. Mr. M. C. Stranger, president of the Burnside Club, speaking on behalf of the latter, said his club would support any move which was for the betterment of golf as far as Te Kuiti was concerned. Having vacated the Te Kuiti racecourse it had been necessary for members of Burnside to travel to Otorohanga for play, but they would, he felt sure, prefer to play nearer home. There would not he felt confident be any objection to amalgamation from his club. Stressing the need for opportunity for improving the game, Mr. T. M. Hetet said that the proposal before the meeting was one which offered every opportunity to achieve this end. The property, of which the speaker had considerable knowledge, was, in his opinion, ideally suited to the purpose of a golf course. Mr. C. H. Tate, president of the Te Kuiti Club, congratulated the chairman on the manner in which he had put the case for the- proposal; he realised, as had the previous speakers, the need for proper links, but urged that the matter should be gone into carefully. The next shift made as far as local golf links were concerned must be the last shift. He pointed out that the three heads under which the scheme could be negotiated successfully were satisfactory tenure, terms, and suitable arrangement insofar as transport was concerned, the latter being a particularly important issue. Other speakers, who had inspected the property, spoke in high terms of the merits of the property from a golf links point of view. After the discussion the meeting unanimously resolved that the suggestion of taking up new links be approved and that a committee be set up with a view to finalising the acquisition of the course, also that it be a recommendation to both clubs to fall in with the scheme. The following interim committee was set up to make preliminary arrangements: Messrs. M. W. A. Horne, T. M. Hetet, J. M. Hine, W. Frerichs, C. Johnson, P. H. Passau, A. W. Whyte and S. M. Wilson. A meeting of the Te Kuiti Golf Club will be held on Monday night for the purpose of discussing the above proposal.
