THE UNEMPLOYED
SETTLEMENT ON LAND. ACQUISITION OF AREAS. It is believed that proposals will shortly be placed before Cabinet for the settlement of the unemployed on the land, and that if they are approved legislation will follow. Reports are current that the proposals involve the principle of the compulsory acquisition of portions of private holdings not now in use, but it is not possible to secure confirmation of these reports. Since the recent conference of Ministers and departmental experts, the Right Hon. J. G. Coates has been in close touch with sub-committees appointed from the main conference with the object of putting the various proposals into concrete form. It is believed that the object of any legislation inti’oduced will be to provide for the leasing of undeveloped parts of existing farm properties to the unemployed.
