BAND SPORTS

WEATHER AGAIN UNFAVOURABLE. Owing to the several postponements on account of ' the weather, the Maniapoto Silver Band sports did not receive the support hoped for last Saturday. Also, the weather was threatening and showery, and this probably kept many patrons away; towards the end of the afternoon the weather broke, and the rain started in earnest. These reasons also made serious inroads into the procession, only one decorated car and two or three cycles being included, although there was a good muster of children in fancy dress. The two leaders of the procession, a mounted clown and a naval-looking gentleman with a red nose and stiff, bristly whiskers caused some amusement as they lead the band and the others from Taupiri Street to the Domain. The programme of the afternoon was slightly shortened because of several events having to be cut out through lack of support, but some of the short-distance events had full entries, and some good, if not fast races, were contested. The “penny-farthing,” in spite of rumours to the contrary, was not successful in any of the cycle races. The various side sideshows received fair support; this is no doubt due to the expert salesmanship displayed by the local “sideshowmen.” Some fine, loud and compelling voices were heard. The sideshows included a shooting gallery, which received much support, knocking the gentleman’s hat off, ringing the necks of bottles, houpla, a chopping booth, at which several local celebrities demonstrated their skill—or, at any rate, in comparison with their expert opponent, Mr. Knapp, their lack of it. However, there was no lack of good humour. Prize List. Decorated Motor Vehicle: J. Stuart 1. Decorated Cycle: Irene Cullen 2, C. Payne 3. Fancy Costume.—(Girls): Lally Dyall 1, Naomi Howell 2.
