ECONOMICAL RUNNING

DIESEL-ENGINED BUS. FIRST IN DOMINION. A 656-mile journey in the South Island with a fuel bill of only 18s. 9d. is the performance claimed by the first complete Diesel-eng'ined bus chassis to be brought to New Zealand. This chassis is at present in Wellington. The engine requires no “boosting” and starts right oil' from cold when the electric switch is engaged. The fuel costs 5 £d. a gallon, and is noninflammable. Also there is an absence of noxious gases. Compared with a petrol-driven bus, at present oil and petrol prices, the Diesel is claimed to show a saving of £6OO on 50,000 miles of running. The tank holds enough oil for 500 miles without refilling. There are no spark plugs, magneto, or fan. The cooling system is quite unique, and while the bus was in the South Island no water was added. The engine is of 47 h.p., developing 71 h.p. at 1000 revolutions a minute. The chassis is 26 feet in length and is designed for a 31-passenger body. The fuel consumption with unladen chassis is 16 miles to the gallon.
