(16) On Saturday the retail price of bread in Christchurch was fixed at lOd per 41b. loaf delivered for cash and 9d for cash over the counter. In a statement issued by the master bakers it was set out that the agreement had been reached following many meetings of the trade to deal with the "price war" which has existed for some time with disastrous effects to bakers. "Considering that the price of flour in Christchurch is £l3 125," says the statement, "it will be seen that the people have been enjoying bread in many cases which has absolutely no relation to the ingredient cost. It will be remembered that when flour was £l6 15s per ton bread sold at Is Id delivered and Is over the counter. The reduction from £16. 15s to £l3 12s per ton (brought about by the modification of the wheat duties and wage cuts) represents approximately Id drop in the cost of the loaf. It is obvious that the price schedule advertised to-day must be further increased before the bakers cease losing their capital."
