“Smoking 1 ?” queried an old Auckland identity the other day. “Why, I can remember the time in England when ‘blowing 1 a cloud’ was considered hardly respectable. No one smoked in the streets. It wasn’t done. And in those days if a woman caught a whiff of tobacco-smoke she was ready to faint. Now she’s ready to faint if she can’t get a smoke. Smoking’s a boon, but if I had my way I’d stop the sale of tobacco containing over much nicotine. It’s ruination to the health of smokers. Nicotine is an insidious poison. Gets you before you know! Some of the imported leaf is foul with it. Not so the New Zealand, though! It’s toasted. That means it’s as sweet as a nut and quite harmless, for the nicotine has been eliminated. There’s no liner smoking tobacco produced!” This vetei’an smoker referred to the four famous brands: Riverhead Gold, Navy Cut No. 3, Cavendish and Cut Plug No. 10. No other toasted tobaccos are manufactured. Their popularity has had the usual result: Imitations are on the market. Beware! (259)
