Mr. Stanley Baldwin, at Ottawa on Thursday, made an important statement on the attitude of Britain in regard to reciprocal preferences in Empire trade. The statement, made publicly, has caused surprise by its directness, and is considered in Ottawa as indicating that the Dominions’ “demands” represent a good deal more than Britain is receiving in return. A group of the Bonus Army, which has been in Washington for some time in an effort to force the Government to pay the promised money to ex-servicemen, on Thursday resorted to violence after being evicted from the building they have been occupying in Lower Pennsylvania Avenue. It was reported that 700 members of a Chinese volunteer corps attacked Suichung, a town between Chinchow and Shanghaikwan. They were repulsed, leaving over 200 dead, after very severe fighting. (11) The total application for British War Loan conversions to date are as follows: Bank of England, 1,086,000; Post Office Savings Bank, 666,000; Trustees Savings Bank, 86,000; Bank of Ireland, 31,000; grand total, 1,869,000, of which 1,755,000 are for conversion. The total holdings are about 2,600,000. What, appears to have been a nation-wide plot to undermine the banks was revealed by the Federal agent in Chicago, who raided the hotel room of George Rowland, an alleged Communist of Pontiac, Michigan. They found a number of documents detailing a “whispering campaign” against the banks throughout the Middle West.
