PIO PIO

(Own Correspondent.) In the Town Hall on Wednesday evening-, July 25th, a farewell dance was given to Mr. and Mrs. Neeley, who have since left the district, after residing- here about 10 years. They intend to live with their family on their farm near Kawhia. During- the evening a very handsome chiming- clock was presented by Mr. Webb to Mr. and Mrs. Neeley, on behalf of the Sports Club and residents of the district. Mr. and Mrs. Neeley have always interested themselves in the affairs of Pio Pio, Mrs. Neeley in Presbyterian Church work and Mr. Neeley in sport, especially the junior football club, in which he took great interest. Mr. Neal endorsed all Mr. Webb had said, and hoped they would be very happy in their new home. Mr. Neeley thanked all on behalf of his wife and himself, for the handsome and useful present. After having lived for so many years in the district they were sorry to leave. Dancing was much enjoyed and continued till 2.30 a.m. The music was excellent and was supplied by Mr. Whitton, piano, and Mr. McAlley, cornet. Mr. Keith Walker acted as M.C. The supper was in the capable hands of Mesdames Andrews, Harvey, Webb and Young. Mrs. Neeley wore black and floral chiffon, and Miss Vida Neeley's dress was king-fisher satin beaute. Amongst those present were the following*:— Mesdames Gauntlett, Bargh, Young, Webb, Andrews, Harvey, McDonald, Porter, Cayley-Alexander, TJrickland, Armstrong, Topp, Coates, E. Smith, C. Jackson, Nilson, C. Smith, Box, Fisher, Larsen, F. Walker, White, Ngapaenga, George Smith, Julian, Somerfield, McAlley, Misses Lena Slines, Joyce, Jackscn, Maisie White, Monaghan (3), Griffin, Amy Smith, Dempsey (2), Vera Harvey, Annie and Rene Fisher, Jessie Neal, Brickland (2), Remnant, Marian Johnston. There was a full attendance of W.D.F.U. members at their committee meeting on sale day, 21st July, and the Rest Room was crowded, many visitors coming from the outlying districts. Mrs. Miles unfortunately was unable to attend owing to illness, to demonstrate the rug-mak-ing. It was the Mangaotaki ladies' tea, and everybody did full justice to all the dainties that had been provided The hostesses were Mesdames S. Ronaldson, N. Ronaldson. Mcßae, Lowe, Larsen, Bilton, Misses Bilton (2), McGinn, Joyce, Jackson. The exchange mart was in charge of Mrs. Hodson, assisted by Miss Kathleen Hodson. A Plunket meeting was held on the same day. Mrs. Nilson was in the chair. Present: Mrs. Young, secretary and treasurer, Mesdames Robison, Trice, Laurie, McKenzie, Voyce, C. Johnston, Cayley-Alexan-der. On August 11th next sale day, Miss Cooke, secretary of the Marton branch of the Plunket Society, is visiting Pio Pio, and will give an address in the Rest Room on the work of the Society. Mrs. Rolleston, president of the Te Kuiti branch, and other members will also be present. It is hoped all interested will •' especially the young mothers. Members of the Play-reading- Club, which meets every fortnight, have decided to put on shortly a one-act play, supported by two short sketches. On Thursday morning about 11 o'clock, whilst driving round the tricky bend leading to the Mangaokowhai Road, one of Mr. Dransfield's trucks fell over the bridge and landed upside down in the water below. Later in the day it was hauled on to the road again. The driver of the ti*uck had his back slightly injured. Mrs. Evans and Mrs. Robison have returned from a short holiday in Auckland. Miss Neroli Gould is enjoying a holiday in Christchurch. Mrs. Weldon returned home on Sunday from Auckland. The deepest sympathy of every resident in the district is felt for Mr. and Mrs. R. Boddy and famil" in the sad death of their youngest daughter, Evelyn ("Peter"). Out of respect and the esteem in which they are held in the district, the Masonic ball, which was to have been held on Friday evening last, did not take place, also all football and hockey matches wele postponed last Saturday. The funeral took place at 1.30 p.m.. on Sunday.
