DISTRICT NEWS

WAIMIHA (Own Correspondent.) The annual picnic of the Waimiha school was held on the native football grounds on Saturday, 12th inst., with splendid weather prevailing and a large crowd present. The secretary of the school committee had excelled himself in the organising of the arrangements for the day, resulting in the day's fun, frolic and feast for the being carried through without a hitch. Call steward for the day was Mr. C. E. Middleton, chairman of the school committee, who kept things going like clockwork. The starter for all races, Mr. Dalzell, can be congratulated on the way he got his fields away. Handicappers: Miss Needham, assistant teacher, and Mr. Dalzell. Judges: Messrs. W. Fenton and A. Miller, who on many occasions were given a difficult task, but were fully capable of meeting any demands arising from their important duties. The ladies' committee are also to be highly congratulated on the splendid manner in which they busied themselves with attempting to satisfy the voracious appetites at lunch and afternoon tea. There was a plentiful supply of good things provided by the mothers. The thanks of the school committee is due to all those who helped in any way to the success of the picnic. Girls' championship: Mihi Tapitahi. Boys' threelegged race: Willie Speers and Stanley Litt 1, Paul Hodgson and Charlie Pahi tied with Norman Kingi and Charlie Harrison for 2nd. . Girls' three-legged race: Tuhi Renata and Mihi Tapitahi 1, June Humberstone and Hazel Litt 2. Thread the Needle: Sunny Putahi and Pango Pehikeno 1, Stanley Litt and Doris Bentley 2 . Wheelbarrow Race: Pango Pehikeno and Charlie Pahi (wheelbarrow) 1, Ngahaka Pahi and Arthur Kingi (wheelbarrow) 2. Bride and Bridegroom: Willie Speers and Ngahaka Pahi 1, Colin Middleton and Mary Sheely 2. Steeplechase, 300 yards: Bob Speers 1, Arthur Kingi 2, Nicholas Renati 3. Consolation, boys: John Saric 1, Kaka Kingi 2, John Bentley 3. Consolation, girls: Ruby Speers 1, Lucy Kakenga 2 Nehi Harrison 3. Single ladies race: Francis Halford 1, Zena Connell 2. Married ladies' race: Mrs. Sheely 1, Mrs. Larking 2. Married men's race: Mr. Dalzell 1, Mr. Larking 2. Stepping the distance: Mr. Osborne, 58ft 7in., 1; Mr. Humberstone, 60ft, 2. Mr. Osborne donated the prize money to the picnic fund. The married men and married ladies' races probably were the best races of the day, both events commanding large fields and the finishes being very closely contested. The married ladies, as usual, were a source of trouble to the handicapper, but this gentleman was up to all the tricks of the trade. In the evening a very enjoyable dance was held in the Waimiha Picture Palace, with a fine crowd preSplendid music by the Te Makoe orchestra was provided. Mr. F. .Beasley filled the position of M.C. in a very capable manner. The floor was in splendid order and a very dainty supper was handed around. Married ladies' prizes were presented by Mr. L. Innes—billy of tea and sugar basin, and the single ladies' prizes by Mr. J. K. Natali—bottle of scent and a string of beads.
