ECONOMY IN TURKEY

POLITICIANS AND THE "CUT."

In. a recent Cabinet meeting the Turkish Ministers decided to give the nation an example of seliVsacrifice. They accordingly informed the Popular Party that tihey , had agreed to cut down their monthly salaries to 200. Turkish liras, and to suppress the cars attached to their Ministries.

Turkish Ministers used to be paid 900 liras a month—that., is, 590 as deputies and 400 as Ministers. The Parliamentary indemnity having been of late reduced to 350 liras, the new decision, would mean a reduction of 550 liras. The Prime Minister would thus have drawn a salary of 50 liras less than that of his own under-sec-retary. T j ' , '

The Party,. discussing the proposal, expressed the view that the sacrifice could not he accepted, as the Cabinet Ministers could not be expected to suffer under the heavy cost of living at Angora and to waste time in walking in order to save the expense of driving.—The World To-day.
