ART UNION BAN

EARLY DECISION LIKELY.

REVIEW BY CABINET. The art union at present being run throughout New Zealand is the last of the series for which permission has been given, and it is possible that the Government will place a ban on art unions after this one has been drawn (states the Dominion). No official, opinion on the question has been expressed, but it is understood that Cabinet will review the whole question at an early date. It is admitted that, on the whole, art unions have been run for deserving causes, but the conditions under which they are being run is causing dissatisfaction. If any permits are granted in the future it is almost certain that the conditions of their issue will be much stricter than in the past. The art unions for which permits have been granted were sanctioned by the United Government, and the whole position will be reviewed by the Coalition Cabinet. So far no time has been available to deal with the question, but it will have to be raised soon. There is a decided possibility that a stop will be put to this method of raising money.
