Indignation is being expressed, says the Christchurch Times, by members of the Territorial Force at an incident in a Magistrate's Court recently when a young man was ordered to join the territorials as a condition of probation. The New Zealand Regulations provide that members of the forces convicted of any civil offence must be dismissed from the forces forthwith. ' Commenting on the matter, Major H. G. Livingstone said that the decision of the magistrate was the most amazing he had ever seen and was likely to cause much concern among parents of territorials. The military forces were on a voluntary basis, and men who had been dealt with by the courts would not be admitted by the order of any magistrate. Other officers expressed similar sentiments and stated that under the law of New Zealand a youth of the type described could not be a member of the forces.
