"The first smoke of the day—can you beat it?" wrotes Frank L. Smedley, in the New York "Smokers' Journal." "I used," he continues, "to bar smoking till after breakfast. Now I have a pipe before I get up! How did I acquire this pernicious habit? It was while I was in New Zealand last fall, and the New Zealand tobacco must take the blame! This is the best I ever smoked, so good I couldn't wait till after breakfast for a whiff. And since my return to Uncle Sam's country I have kept up the practice. The New Zealand tobacco, I should tell you, is toasted (quite an elaborate process) and the toasting frees it of- nicotine and gives it its appealing flavour and famous bouquet. Only four brands are manufactured, and should you think of visiting New Zealand (one of the loveliest countries in the world), you will do well to sample them. I have yet.to find the equal of this tobacco." The four brands referred to by Mr. Smedley are: Riverhead Gold, Navy Cut No, 3, Cavendish and Cut Plug No. 10. (242)
