SHEEP STEALING

CASE AT POMERANGI. TWO NATIVES FINED. In the Magistrate's Court to-day, before Mr. F. W. Platts, S.M., two natives named Tua Tapara and Poho Archie were charged with killing a sheep on the 16th February, 1932, the property of Marinus Neilsen, and stealing the carcase. Sergeant Fearnley stated that defendants had gone shooting on Mr. Haylock's farm and the sheep in question was the property of Marinus Neilsen. When approached, defendants admitted having shot the sheep and hidden it under a log. The Sergeant mentioned that several cases of cattle, both branded and otherwise, having been shot or otherwise destroyed, had occurred on farms in the district, and it was of importance to the farming community that such practices should be put a stop to. Defendants, who were not represented by counsel, pleaded guilty to the charge, and were orderd to pay the cost of the sheep, 65., and each to half of the costs of the prosecution.
