AMERICAN INVENTOR
DEATH BY SUICIDE. WORLD-RENOWNED FIGURE. (Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 12.45 p.m.) New York, March 14.
A message from Rochester states that Mr. George Eastman, aged 74, a multi-millionaire, industrialist, inventor and philanthropist died at his home here to-day. A later message states that Mr. Eastman shot himself. He is known all over the world as a genius in the photographic industry, an art collector, and a big game hunter. His benefactions at the time of his death passed 75,000,000 dollars. A Rochester message states that Dr. Audley Stewart, in announcing that Mr. Eastman had shot himself after putting all his attendants away from the bedside, said that Eastman left this note: "To my friends: My work is done, why wait?" Dr. Stewart, who had been Mr. Eastman's personal physician for many years, said that while Mr. Eastman had been in ill health for many years, he apparently had recovered to a degree encouraging to his friends. He was apparently in such a mental state that he shot himself after sending his friends from the room. A moment after they departed they heard a shot and returned to find him dead.
